Cómpeta
is a traditional white village 18 kilometres inland
on the Costa del Sol , east of Málaga –
near the sea but away from the bustle of the holiday
coast . Situated between the Almijara mountain range
and the Mediterranean. In the surrounding countryside,
raisins, olives, almonds and sub-tropical fruits are
produced.
Many
northern-Europeans have settled in the area as residents
enjoying the Spanish culture and lifestyle. The village
is well equipped for all the needs of foreigners providing
several general supermarkets, two chemists, banks,
a 3-star hotel, a post office and a doctors’
surgery. The local school, situated in the heart of
the village is quite accustomed to the intake of foreign
children, and poses not problem to those who decide
to make Cómpeta their home. There are many
tapas bars and the restaurants in the village, some
with open roof terraces, serve good quality meals.
The
hills around Cómpeta are laced with unmade
tracks which are ideal for walking. You can also drive
or walk into the National Park mountains behind the
village where you can find bar-be-que areas and natural
springs. Nearby on the coast is the well known resort
of Nerja, which has several attractive beaches and
the internationally famed Nerja Caves are just outside
the town, where orchestra and ballet performances
can be seen in summer. There are several golf courses
within easy reach of the village. The Sierra Nevada
ski resort lies approximately 3 hours drive to the
east, passing the village of Lanjarón well
known for its spring water and baths. The weather
is generally good all the year round and Spring and
Autumn are especially pleasant.
Cómpeta
is about an hour from Málaga airport. A hire
car can be arranged to meet arrivals at the airport
if necessary.
