The local school, situated in the heart of the village is quite accustomed to the intake of foreign children, and poses not problem to those who decide to make Cómpeta their home. There are many tapas bars and the restaurants in the village, some with open roof terraces, serve good quality meals.

The hills around Cómpeta are laced with unmade tracks which are ideal for walking. You can also drive or walk into the National Park mountains behind the village where you can find bar-be-que areas and natural springs. Nearby on the coast is the well known resort of Nerja, which has several attractive beaches and the internationally famed Nerja Caves are just outside the town, where orchestra and ballet performances can be seen in summer. There are several golf courses within easy reach of the village. The Sierra Nevada ski resort lies approximately 3 hours drive to the east, passing the village of Lanjarón well known for its spring water and baths. The weather is generally good all the year round and Spring and Autumn are especially pleasant.
